<p>NCBW’s Public Service &amp; Education Committee hosted its annual Scholarship and Awards Reception on Thursday July 29 at the Montclair Bistro in Oakland.</p>
<p>Oakland’s Mayoral Candidate, Vice Mayor Jean Quan, Councilmember Desley Brooks, Assembly Member Sandre Swanson and Supervisor Keith Carson all attended the ceremony.  Each of the officials presented encouraging words on the importance of education and reaching for stars. “You can be anything you want to be in this world of opportunities,” said Supervisor Keith Carson who had earlier participated in an event for Mae Jamison,  First African American Female Astronaut.</p>
<p>The Scholarship ceremony provides an opportunity for the Oakland Bay Area Chapter to honor and support women and girls who are working towards improving their own lives within their communities through the pursuit of higher education. A special Technology Scholarship provided by the Oracle Corporation highlighted this year’s ceremony. The Oracle Technology scholarship was presented by Barbara Williams, Immediate past president of the Oakland Bay Area Chapter and Director of Engagement and Inclusion for Oracle. Gloria Jenkins, President of the Oakland Bay Chapter brought the official greeting to the students on behalf of the board of directors and members of the chapter. This year’s Theme: “Link Leverage Lead” – Students Today – Leaders Tomorrow.</p>
<p>Founder, Cathy D. Adams served as Mistress of Ceremonies in the absence of Rose Scott, Scholarship committee Chair, and VP Corporate Technology QA/Risk for Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo has served as strategic partner of the Oakland Bay Chapter and a direct supporter of the Scholarship program since its inception.</p>
<p> To date, the Oakland/Bay Area Chapter has awarded over $172,000 in scholarships.</p>
